The Power Within | A story around Devi Kushmanda | A short story written by Shreya Bansal

Brief Introduction: A story inspired by  the tale of Devi Mata Kushmanda which highlights an important power we all have.

Once there was a girl named Mridula who always sat alone in the classroom.  Nobody wanted to befriend her. The reason behind this was that she was very cold hearted. At school she never lend her stationary to anyone else. She always used expensive pens bought by her father from U.S.A. Being reluctant to share her stuff, there was an air of hatred for her among the classmates. Everybody looked at her as a girl who was selfish and rude.

Mridula never gave a thought to why she was always left alone until one day she saw that some of her classmates had scribbled her desk with names like ‘SELFISH QUEEN’,’STONEHEARTED’etc.

This made her really sad and that afternoon she didn’t even eat food. Her mother asked the reason for this odd behaviour and Mridula told her everything. Hearing this her mom said nothing and went out of the room. But later she came back with a huge basket  and said  “Darling let’s go out for picnic right now that will do you good”. Mridula was reluctant at first but on being insisted she agreed.

Mother took Mridula to the most beautiful garden of the city. Mridula was spellbound by the beauty and had already forgotten that misery. She was fascinated by the greenery and said “Maa this place is so lovely, here everything is blooming and bright”.

Maa said “Do you know why everything is so prosperous here?” Mridula said “No”. Maa- “That’s because of a smile”. “A smile! What are you talking about?” “I am talking about Devi kushmanda”. “Huh, Devi Kushmanda?”. “Yes, Devi Kushmanda is the reason why this Earth prospers “. “I am not getting it Maa please elaborate”.

Then Maa began “It is believed that the world came to life when Maa Kushmanda smiled.” “First before you or me or before any creature existed there was only darkness in the world. It was then that  our Mata Kushmanda took life. When she smiled that aura of darkness was  eliminated. Universe was formed for the first time. Her smile formed the planets, moon etc and most importantly the Sun. She is the controller of the Sun and Sun with its warmth gives rise to these beautiful plants and greenery. This green lush here is a blessing of Maa Kushmanda.”

Mridula said “Wow! Mata created all this with a smile!!” Maa said”So can you, my child”. “Huh?”. “I mean to say if Mata’s smile can bring a change , so does your. Your smile has the power to change the world, you can also spread warmth.”

Mridula understood what her Mother was trying to explain. She promised her mother she would also smile and  spread warmth among her classmates.

The next day Mridula distributed chocolates among all her classmates and apologized to them for her behavior. She went to centre of the class and asked if someone wants to befriend her and to her surprise everyone was willing to be with her.

That was the happiest day in Mridula’s life and she agreed that a smile can indeed change the world.
