For the Lady in Blue | A short story by Shreya Bansal | A unique story of love

Brief Introduction: This is a unique and beautiful short story of love. The story revolves around a ten year old boy name Mickey. Read to know more.

Once there was a ten year old boy named Mickey. One day he was watering plants on the terrace of his house. There he saw a beautiful butterfly hovering over a flower. He was so enthralled by its beauty. He had seen butterflies before but this one appeared quite remarkable to his eyes. The major part of the wings was dark blue with red patches and the border of the wings was black in colour with white dots. Looked like a lady flaunting a beautiful blue gown with white polka dots in black lace. Mickey quickly captured this moment in his camera before she flew away.

Next day Mickey was sitting on a bench at the terrace, admiring the same photo in the camera when the butterfly flew in again. He was very delighted to welcome the guest. He noticed that the little beauty only fluttered over the marigold flowers. On his terrace he had plethora of beautiful red roses, tulips and daisies but only a handful of marigold flowers.

He then decided he will place more marigold flowers because that’s what the butterfly likes. But he knew his parents would not allow to waste money on the flowers and he hardly had any money with himself.

Then Mickey made a plan. He decided that he would sacrifice his chocolates and chips to save his pocket money and use that fund for the flowers. He took out a glass jar put a label ‘Butterfly Fund’ on it. It was difficult for him to control his cravings but the love for butterfly made him determinant. Marigold saplings were 50 rupees each and he wanted 9-10 of them i.e. nearly Rs.500. He would save rupees 10-20 each day but that meant a long way to go. One day his mother got to know about this fund and secretly chipped in some money at night. Next day Mickey ran to buy saplings for his love. He planted each and every sapling with so much love. When he saw his lady love fluttering and enjoying, it gave him immense happiness.

In the upcoming days they formed a silent bond. The butterfly would flutter around happily and Mickey would be busy clicking her pictures. He had also decorated his room with her photos. Sometimes the butterfly would sit on his hand and stay on it for several minutes.Mickey called him his blue lady.

And then there came a twist. The butterfly did not turn up for many days. This made Mickey sad and desolate. He would sit on the bench and wait, but she wouldn’t come. Now Mickey’s only pass time was adoring the pictures on his wall. His days were empty without the little companion.

One day while returning from school he saw that the lane behind his house was very filthy and smelly. He remembered his pledge at school to keep his city clean and so without wasting any time he started cleaning it all by himself. When his mother saw him she was very proud of his son and was left teary eyed. She later gifted him some money as his prize. Mickey spent the money on marigold saplings and decorated them behind his house in the memory of his love.

The next day when Mickey woke up he saw many blue butterflies through his window. He rushed upstairs to his terrace and saw thousands of blue butterflies flying over his house. He was so spellbound by this scene. He couldn’t believe his eyes. It looked heavenly beautiful. And then one blue butterfly sat on his hand and he knew his lady love is back. He thought his teacher was right when she said “cleanliness is next to godliness”.  Now that his lady was back he decided he will never let her go and always keep the surroundings clean to make her happy. And so he and his lady spent beautiful moments forever after.
