Chapter 1 | Lost in the City

“Ishika, is your room ready? Have you arranged everything at its place?” asked my mom while entering my room.

“Yes mom, and by the way, what is there to arrange? There is hardly anything in the room.” I said in an irritated and frustrated tone.

“Why don’t you decorate your room the way you had done in Delhi, my doll.” Said mom in a soft tone while giving me a hug.

“I don’t want to. I don’t feel like decorating this room. This room doesn’t give me that feeling.” I was still answering rudely.

“Ishu, baby, just get over with this anger now. We are in a new city and a new house. I am not saying that Delhi is over. No…No…We will still go at regular intervals to meet ours and your friends. Isn’t that enough?” Mom tried to explain and assure me.

“But mom, I am not comfortable here. My friends are there. My life is there not here. Delhi University was my dream. I wanted to study there. I don’t like this college. I don’t have any friends here. And I know I won’t be able to make friends like Shweta, Preeti and Pratima. They are my best friends. I miss them a lot.” I started crying while explaining my point of view to mom.

Mom tried to console me. But I kept crying. “Ishu, now this is too much. You are a grown up girl! You know your father has a transferable job. It’s not only you who has left friends behind. I have also left my Kitty Party friends. Your dad also had his friend circle there. We all have to start fresh now and adjust with the new place and situations.

Leaving friends behind does not mean we will stop exploring and stop making new friends. Infact, I have already made two new friends here! Mrs. Khurana and Mrs. Sharma. They both are our neighbors.” Mom said excitedly.

“But mom, you know my nature. I am not like you. I can’t start talking to people just like that. I need time. I can’t open myself to strangers.” I tried to explain mom.

“I know my princess, you have always been a shy and introvert child. But now that you have stepped into a whole new world, you need to shed away your inhibitions and start exploring new people. This is the Mantra of success in life my child!”

“But….Mom…my old friends are no more with me. How can ….” Mom interrupted in between, “Ishika, in this era of Facebook and video calls you are saying that your old friends are not with you. Come on, sweety. You know you can chat and video call them daily. And you do that. Don’t you?” she glared at me for an answer and I nodded my head in a big ‘Yes’.

“So come on, Cheer up. Go, have a bath. And I am going to prepare special breakfast for you today.” Mom looked at me with a smile and I smiled back at her giving her a hug. She went inside the kitchen and I started thinking again.
My dad has a transferable job. Every 5 years we had to shift to a new city. No one can understand my point. How difficult it becomes to adjust in a new city and make new friends again. The longest we stayed was in Delhi. Almost 7 years. And 7 years are enough to fall in love with that city. It has a different vibe. The youth has so much to explore here. And if we talk about the career options, Delhi provides ample opportunities and unlimited fields.

I had planned a lot with my friends about career and jobs in Delhi. But all that is ruined now. At least, in my opinion it’s ruined.

Udaipur….one of the most beautiful cities to be explored. The lakes, temples, huge forts and palaces boast about the rich legacy of this city. This ‘Venice of the East’ has abundance of natural beauty. But, I haven’t explored this city yet. It has been two months since we shifted here, but didn’t get the time to visit the mesmerizing temples and breathtaking architecture Udaipur offers. Till date we just went to Hathipol and Chetak circle, the local market of Udaipur, for shopping some amazing wooden handicrafts.

Though Udaipur is an exciting city to live in, but I am still in love with Delhi. I was planning to get admission in Delhi University with hostel facility. But two years back dad got a minor heart stroke and mom too is diabetic patient. I can’t leave them alone to fulfill my dreams. I have to accept the fact that I have to finish my further studies living here in Udaipur.

With this thought I picked up my bag and headed towards my college. What’s stored for me in near future, only God knows it.

But I was unaware, that I was up for a roller coaster ride in the coming months, which would change my perspective about life and people.
