Guilty or Not | Written by Simmy | a Poem for Medical Practitioners

About the poem: Medical Practitioners do carry a big responsibility on their shoulders. Sometimes they appear to have been hardened but are they really? What goes on inside them? Read this poem ‘Guilty or Not’ by Simmy to know….

We took an oath
Made personal declaration
All the while facing the arduous journey of learning
Spine erect, shoulders straight
We took on the years of battle of training
To learn everything we can on saving lives

Theoretically, we excelled
Giving us the strength and courage to face the practicals
Using all that we acquired, we swore to try our best to save all
Joy, did we derive from helping to bring relief

Our courage doubled from the smiles we received from those we helped
Then we truly believed we could help all and rid the world of illnesses and diseases
Until… It struck us

Our first,
First feeling of helplessness
First life lost
We realized, not all lives could be saved
As we gazed down at the still form of what had had life in it

Then came the fear, guilt and doubt
Asking if I could have done things differently would it have made a difference
“Is this my fault?”, We ask ourselves, crying.
Series of what ifs begin to bloom within us

The guilt comes to rest on our shoulders
And for a while we lose sleep.
Shaking it off, we carry on
But with a shred of doubt now and slightly less courageous

Then, we lose the second, third, fourth
And we begin to think “Am I jinxed?”
“Are they somehow dead because I have the touch of death?”
“Would they have been alive if I hadn’t touched them?”

The fear of touching others somehow takes root within us
But, that doesn’t stop us from still trying to help
Because, we already took that oath
One we never forget
And gradually, we accumulate the guilt from each life we couldn’t save

Subsequently, we take up a skill
The skill to handle the guilt and still keep going
Because, If we don’t who else will do the saving
Striving to save in multiples to the lives we’ve lost,
Is a determination that keeps us going strong

*Battles in the mind of medical practitioners is a daily battle*
